The Guthrie Center at the old Trinity Church

Alice’s Restaurant isn’t around anymore. But, as the song says, “Alice didn’t live in a restaurant. She lived in the church nearby the restaurant…” And the old Trinity Church, where Alice once lived and where the saga began has become home to The Guthrie Center and The Guthrie Foundation.

Arlo Guthrie providing a place to bring together individuals for spiritual service, as well as cultural and educational exchange founded the Guthrie Center, an Interfaith Church, in 1991. The Trinity Church where the song “The Alice’s Restaurant Massacree” began and where the movie “Alice’s Restaurant” was filmed, continues to service the local and international community.

Originally built as the St. James Episcopal Chapel in 1829, the structure was enlarged in 1866 and renamed Trinity Episcopal Church. Ray and Alice Brock purchased the property in 1964 and made it their home. The building has had several owners since the early 1970s. Then in 1991 Arlo Guthrie bought "the old Trinity Church."

Alice's Restaurant Massacree By Arlo Guthrie means Happy Thanksgiving! Give thanks & peace :)

Alice's Restaurant
By Arlo Guthrie

This song is called Alice's Restaurant, and it's about Alice, and the
restaurant, but Alice's Restaurant is not the name of the restaurant,
that's just the name of the song, and that's why I called the song Alice's
Restaurant.

You can get anything you want at Alice's Restaurant
You can get anything you want at Alice's Restaurant
Walk right in it's around the back
Just a half a mile from the railroad track
You can get anything you want at Alice's Restaurant

Now it all started two Thanksgivings ago, was on - two years ago on
Thanksgiving, when my friend and I went up to visit Alice at the
restaurant, but Alice doesn't live in the restaurant, she lives in the
church nearby the restaurant, in the bell-tower, with her husband Ray and
Fasha the dog. And livin' in the bell tower like that, they got a lot of
room downstairs where the pews used to be in. Havin' all that room,
seein' as how they took out all the pews, they decided that they didn't
have to take out their garbage for a long time.

We got up there, we found all the garbage in there, and we decided it'd be
a friendly gesture for us to take the garbage down to the city dump. So
we took the half a ton of garbage, put it in the back of a red VW
microbus, took shovels and rakes and implements of destruction and headed
on toward the city dump.

Well we got there and there was a big sign and a chain across across the
dump saying, "Closed on Thanksgiving." And we had never heard of a dump
closed on Thanksgiving before, and with tears in our eyes we drove off
into the sunset looking for another place to put the garbage.

We didn't find one. Until we came to a side road, and off the side of the
side road there was another fifteen foot cliff and at the bottom of the
cliff there was another pile of garbage. And we decided that one big pile
is better than two little piles, and rather than bring that one up we
decided to throw our's down.

That's what we did, and drove back to the church, had a thanksgiving
dinner that couldn't be beat, went to sleep and didn't get up until the
next morning, when we got a phone call from officer Obie. He said, "Kid,
we found your name on an envelope at the bottom of a half a ton of
garbage, and just wanted to know if you had any information about it." And
I said, "Yes, sir, Officer Obie, I cannot tell a lie, I put that envelope
under that garbage."

After speaking to Obie for about fourty-five minutes on the telephone we
finally arrived at the truth of the matter and said that we had to go down
and pick up the garbage, and also had to go down and speak to him at the
police officer's station. So we got in the red VW microbus with the
shovels and rakes and implements of destruction and headed on toward the
police officer's station.

Now friends, there was only one or two things that Obie coulda done at
the police station, and the first was he could have given us a medal for
being so brave and honest on the telephone, which wasn't very likely, and
we didn't expect it, and the other thing was he could have bawled us out
and told us never to be see driving garbage around the vicinity again,
which is what we expected, but when we got to the police officer's station
there was a third possibility that we hadn't even counted upon, and we was
both immediately arrested. Handcuffed. And I said "Obie, I don't think I
can pick up the garbage with these handcuffs on." He said, "Shut up, kid.
Get in the back of the patrol car."

And that's what we did, sat in the back of the patrol car and drove to the
quote Scene of the Crime unquote. I want tell you about the town of
Stockbridge, Massachusets, where this happened here, they got three stop
signs, two police officers, and one police car, but when we got to the
Scene of the Crime there was five police officers and three police cars,
being the biggest crime of the last fifty years, and everybody wanted to
get in the newspaper story about it. And they was using up all kinds of
cop equipment that they had hanging around the police officer's station.
They was taking plaster tire tracks, foot prints, dog smelling prints, and
they took twenty seven eight-by-ten colour glossy photographs with circles
and arrows and a paragraph on the back of each one explaining what each
one was to be used as evidence against us. Took pictures of the approach,
the getaway, the northwest corner the southwest corner and that's not to
mention the aerial photography.

After the ordeal, we went back to the jail. Obie said he was going to put
us in the cell. Said, "Kid, I'm going to put you in the cell, I want your
wallet and your belt." And I said, "Obie, I can understand you wanting my
wallet so I don't have any money to spend in the cell, but what do you
want my belt for?" And he said, "Kid, we don't want any hangings." I
said, "Obie, did you think I was going to hang myself for littering?"
Obie said he was making sure, and friends Obie was, cause he took out the
toilet seat so I couldn't hit myself over the head and drown, and he took
out the toilet paper so I couldn't bend the bars roll out the - roll the
toilet paper out the window, slide down the roll and have an escape. Obie
was making sure, and it was about four or five hours later that Alice
(remember Alice? It's a song about Alice), Alice came by and with a few
nasty words to Obie on the side, bailed us out of jail, and we went back
to the church, had a another thanksgiving dinner that couldn't be beat,
and didn't get up until the next morning, when we all had to go to court.

We walked in, sat down, Obie came in with the twenty seven eight-by-ten
colour glossy pictures with circles and arrows and a paragraph on the back
of each one, sat down. Man came in said, "All rise." We all stood up,
and Obie stood up with the twenty seven eight-by-ten colour glossy
pictures, and the judge walked in sat down with a seeing eye dog, and he
sat down, we sat down. Obie looked at the seeing eye dog, and then at the
twenty seven eight-by-ten colour glossy pictures with circles and arrows
and a paragraph on the back of each one, and looked at the seeing eye dog.
And then at twenty seven eight-by-ten colour glossy pictures with circles
and arrows and a paragraph on the back of each one and began to cry,
'cause Obie came to the realization that it was a typical case of American
blind justice, and there wasn't nothing he could do about it, and the
judge wasn't going to look at the twenty seven eight-by-ten colour glossy
pictures with the circles and arrows and a paragraph on the back of each
one explaining what each one was to be used as evidence against us. And
we was fined $50 and had to pick up the garbage in the snow, but thats not
what I came to tell you about.

Came to talk about the draft.

They got a building down New York City, it's called Whitehall Street,
where you walk in, you get injected, inspected, detected, infected,
neglected and selected. I went down to get my physical examination one
day, and I walked in, I sat down, got good and drunk the night before, so
I looked and felt my best when I went in that morning. 'Cause I wanted to
look like the all-American kid from New York City, man I wanted, I wanted
to feel like the all-, I wanted to be the all American kid from New York,
and I walked in, sat down, I was hung down, brung down, hung up, and all
kinds o' mean nasty ugly things. And I waked in and sat down and they gave
me a piece of paper, said, "Kid, see the phsychiatrist, room 604."

And I went up there, I said, "Shrink, I want to kill. I mean, I wanna, I
wanna kill. Kill. I wanna, I wanna see, I wanna see blood and gore and
guts and veins in my teeth. Eat dead burnt bodies. I mean kill, Kill,
KILL, KILL." And I started jumpin up and down yelling, "KILL, KILL," and
he started jumpin up and down with me and we was both jumping up and down
yelling, "KILL, KILL." And the sargent came over, pinned a medal on me,
sent me down the hall, said, "You're our boy."

Didn't feel too good about it.

Proceeded on down the hall gettin more injections, inspections,
detections, neglections and all kinds of stuff that they was doin' to me
at the thing there, and I was there for two hours, three hours, four
hours, I was there for a long time going through all kinds of mean nasty
ugly things and I was just having a tough time there, and they was
inspecting, injecting every single part of me, and they was leaving no
part untouched. Proceeded through, and when I finally came to the see the
last man, I walked in, walked in sat down after a whole big thing there,
and I walked up and said, "What do you want?" He said, "Kid, we only got
one question. Have you ever been arrested?"

And I proceeded to tell him the story of the Alice's Restaurant Massacre,
with full orchestration and five part harmony and stuff like that and all
the phenome... - and he stopped me right there and said, "Kid, did you ever
go to court?"

And I proceeded to tell him the story of the twenty seven eight-by-ten
colour glossy pictures with the circles and arrows and the paragraph on
the back of each one, and he stopped me right there and said, "Kid, I want
you to go and sit down on that bench that says Group W .... NOW kid!!"

And I, I walked over to the, to the bench there, and there is, Group W's
where they put you if you may not be moral enough to join the army after
committing your special crime, and there was all kinds of mean nasty ugly
looking people on the bench there. Mother rapers. Father stabbers. Father
rapers! Father rapers sitting right there on the bench next to me! And
they was mean and nasty and ugly and horrible crime-type guys sitting on the
bench next to me. And the meanest, ugliest, nastiest one, the meanest
father raper of them all, was coming over to me and he was mean 'n' ugly
'n' nasty 'n' horrible and all kind of things and he sat down next to me
and said, "Kid, whad'ya get?" I said, "I didn't get nothing, I had to pay
$50 and pick up the garbage." He said, "What were you arrested for, kid?"
And I said, "Littering." And they all moved away from me on the bench
there, and the hairy eyeball and all kinds of mean nasty things, till I
said, "And creating a nuisance." And they all came back, shook my hand,
and we had a great time on the bench, talkin about crime, mother stabbing,
father raping, all kinds of groovy things that we was talking about on the
bench. And everything was fine, we was smoking cigarettes and all kinds of
things, until the Sargeant came over, had some paper in his hand, held it
up and said.

"Kids, this-piece-of-paper's-got-47-words-37-sentences-58-words-we-wanna-
know-details-of-the-crime-time-of-the-crime-and-any-other-kind-of-thing-
you-gotta-say-pertaining-to-and-about-the-crime-I-want-to-know-arresting-
officer's-name-and-any-other-kind-of-thing-you-gotta-say", and talked for
forty-five minutes and nobody understood a word that he said, but we had
fun filling out the forms and playing with the pencils on the bench there,
and I filled out the massacre with the four part harmony, and wrote it
down there, just like it was, and everything was fine and I put down the
pencil, and I turned over the piece of paper, and there, there on the
other side, in the middle of the other side, away from everything else on
the other side, in parentheses, capital letters, quotated, read the
following words:

("KID, HAVE YOU REHABILITATED YOURSELF?")

I went over to the sargent, said, "Sargeant, you got a lot a damn gall to
ask me if I've rehabilitated myself, I mean, I mean, I mean that just, I'm
sittin' here on the bench, I mean I'm sittin here on the Group W bench
'cause you want to know if I'm moral enough join the army, burn women,
kids, houses and villages after bein' a litterbug." He looked at me and
said, "Kid, we don't like your kind, and we're gonna send you fingerprints
off to Washington."

And friends, somewhere in Washington enshrined in some little folder, is a
study in black and white of my fingerprints. And the only reason I'm
singing you this song now is cause you may know somebody in a similar
situation, or you may be in a similar situation, and if your in a
situation like that there's only one thing you can do and that's walk into
the shrink wherever you are ,just walk in say "Shrink, You can get
anything you want, at Alice's restaurant.". And walk out. You know, if
one person, just one person does it they may think he's really sick and
they won't take him. And if two people, two people do it, in harmony,
they may think they're both faggots and they won't take either of them.
And three people do it, three, can you imagine, three people walking in
singin a bar of Alice's Restaurant and walking out. They may think it's an
organization. And can you, can you imagine fifty people a day,I said
fifty people a day walking in singin a bar of Alice's Restaurant and
walking out. And friends they may thinks it's a movement.

And that's what it is , the Alice's Restaurant Anti-Massacre Movement, and
all you got to do to join is sing it the next time it come's around on the
guitar.

With feeling. So we'll wait for it to come around on the guitar, here and
sing it when it does. Here it comes.

You can get anything you want, at Alice's Restaurant
You can get anything you want, at Alice's Restaurant
Walk right in it's around the back
Just a half a mile from the railroad track
You can get anything you want, at Alice's Restaurant

That was horrible. If you want to end war and stuff you got to sing loud.
I've been singing this song now for twenty five minutes. I could sing it
for another twenty five minutes. I'm not proud... or tired.

So we'll wait till it comes around again, and this time with four part
harmony and feeling.

We're just waitin' for it to come around is what we're doing.

All right now.

You can get anything you want, at Alice's Restaurant
Excepting Alice
You can get anything you want, at Alice's Restaurant
Walk right in it's around the back
Just a half a mile from the railroad track
You can get anything you want, at Alice's Restaurant

Da da da da da da da dum
At Alice's Restaurant.

Sacramento History

The history of Sacramento, California began with its founding by Samuel Brannan and John Augustus Sutter, Jr. in 1848 around an embarcadero that John Augustus Sutter, Jr. constructed at the confluence of the American and Sacramento Rivers a few years prior. After the arrival of Europeans, the Nisenan branch of the Native American Maidu inhabited the Sacramento Valley area. The Spanish were the first to explore the area, and Sacramento fell into the Alta California province of New Spain when the conquistadors claimed Central America and the American Southwest for the Spanish Empire. The area was deemed unfit for colonization by a number of explorers, and as a result remained relatively untouched by the Europeans who claimed the region. When John Sutter arrived in the provincial colonial capital of Monterey in 1839, governor Juan Bautista Alvarado provided Sutter with the land he asked for and Sutter established New Helvetia, which he controlled absolutely with a private army and relative autonomy from the newly independent Mexican government.

The California Gold Rush started when gold was discovered at Sutter's Mill, one of Sutter, Sr.'s assets in the city of Coloma in 1848; the arrival of prospectors in droves ruined Sutter's New Helvetia, and trade began to develop around a wharf he had established where the American and Sacramento Rivers joined. In the region where Sutter had planned to establish the city of Sutterville, Sacramento City was founded; Sutter, Sr. put his son in charge in frustration, and Sutter, Jr. worked to organize the city in its growth. However, its location caused the city to periodically fill with water. Fires would also sweep through the city. To resolve the problems, the city worked to raise the sidewalks and buildings and began to replace wooden structures with more resilient materials, like brick and stone. The city was selected as the state capital in 1854 after Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo failed to convince the state government to remain in the city of his namesake.

Recipe: Blueberry-Corn Muffins --- Sacramento Life Force Home Health Care

Recipe: Blueberry-Corn Muffins
Filed under: Recipes — saclifeforce @ 2:48 pm

Here is a recipe that one of our long time staff members found, while looking for recipes for one of our clients on-line. She passed this on to us to pass on to you. This is from The Humane Society recipes page.

Blueberry-Corn Muffins

Start your day off right with these blueberry-corn muffins.

Makes 12 Muffins

1 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup cornmeal
1 tablespoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/3 cup sugar
1/2 cup corn or vegetable oil
3/4 cup soy milk
2 tablespoons soy yogurt
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Finely grated zest of 1 lemon
1-1/4 cups blueberries

Preheat the oven to 400° F (222° C). Lightly grease a twelve-muffin tin.

In a large bowl, sift together the flour, cornmeal, baking powder, salt and sugar. In a separate bowl, whisk together the oil, soy milk, soy yogurt, vanilla and lemon zest. With a wooden spoon, fold the wet ingredients into the dry. Fold in the blueberries, being careful not to overmix.

Fill each muffin cup three-quarters full. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, until a toothpick or knife inserted in the center of one comes out clean. Serve warm.

Tip: To keep the blueberries from sinking to the bottom of the muffin, toss them in a bowl of flour to coat. That will give them some “grip” in the batter.

The Sacramento Life Force addition to this recipe is to dribble some honey on the top of each muffin :)

Getting ready to help our clients do a little gardening

Sacramento Life Force Gardening with Clients.

Each year at this time many of our clients and our staff start to get excited that spring is coming. It is that time when many of our clients plant some flowers, vegetables or spices (or all) with our staff. It does not matter whether our clients live in a house, condo or an apartment.

Our staff can help our clients plant items on their back patio/porch/door area, in buckets or in the ground. Also, the client and staff can plant flowers near the front door, to add some life and cheer to the home, not only from the inside, but from the out side as well.

Now we are not a lawn and yard service, but we can help with some light gardening. Like having a pet helps certain older folks with companionship, and having a pet can work that way for all of us for that matter!!! Gardening keeps a balance and normalcy in a persons life. Especially when that person has always planted a few things around in their yard through their life. Gardening helps in a therapeutic way for an individual, it help one find that inner peace and calm.

We water the plants together with our clients too, and the exercise is good for all involved. We can use the vegetable/spice items in meals that we prepare, or we help prepare with our clients, as well. And, as Martha Stewart would say: “And that’s a good thing!”

We can help our clients pick out the flowers, vegetable and/or spice plants they like. Of course we can do more if our clients can not help that much, so everyone can take part in the adventure of light gardening, and the cheer it brings. We find that Cherry Tomatoes and Purple Pixie Eggplants grow the best in buckets on the back porch :)

How You Can Help Canada's Seals!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Canada's Shame

http://www.canadasshame.com/Default.aspx

Most people would agree that there is something terribly wrong with shooting and smashing in the skulls of baby seals, yet despite international outrage, the Canadian government allows sealers to beat and skin hundreds of thousands of these gentle creatures every year. So why is Canada killing seals?

The seal slaughter exists because of the overall demand for fur. During Canada's annual war on seals, sealers routinely hook live seals in the eye, cheek, or mouth to avoid damaging the fur, then they drag the seals across the ice. Many of these gentle creatures may not even have eaten their first solid meal or taken their first swim before they are slaughtered for their skin.

In 2009, the European Union voted to end the sale of seal products, and the U.S. Senate unanimously passed U.S. Senate Resolution 84, calling for an immediate end to the annual seal slaughter. It's time for Canada to wake up! And with the help of caring people like you, we can put an end to the slaughter once and for all.

How You Can Help Seals????????

http://www.canadasshame.com/Stop.aspx

Most people are horrified to learn that baby seals have their skulls smashed in or are shot to death each year during Canada's annual war on seals. So how will your friends and family members find out about the slaughter and how to help stop it? You need to tell them!

WHERE ARE YOU OBAMA????

WHERE ARE YOU OBAMA????

It is SO WRONG that NO Governmental body be it federal, state or local is doing anything to help small businesses....WHERE ARE YOU OBAMA???? Heck where is Congress???? Where is Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi??? Where is local and state government??? Where is anyone?????? OR is it just one big screw you, your on your own to ALL small businesses in the USA??? Because that has been what we have got.....NOTHING!!! And, nothing just equals screw you. Actions Speak Louder Then Words Mr. President!!! Small business did NOT create this mess.

President Obama if you want to get things rolling again look toward America's small and medium sized businesses.....want those unemployment numbers down??? Part of the answer is right in front of you, in EVERY community and state in America. It's called The Small Business Person. Then why are you and Congress so blind? Do you Democrats even get it, or even care to get it?????

When we have a 14 plus trillion dollar economy, that 15 billion dollar "Jobs Stimulus Bill" was just an insult to all small business people in this country, and shows that the Democrats just don't get it. Helping small and medium sized middle class business people is NOT the same as some bail out to Citi Bank, AIG, Bank of America, or the other jokers that are "to large to fail". We work hard and make America the power it really is and you guys don't get it.

These large banks and other finical institutions are the problem. They loan nothing out, they take lines of credit away and credit card limits away. They do this even when the business people have repaid all loans and credit in good faith, and have good credit. The big irresponsible and arrogant financial mega corporations should have been cut off long ago. They drink up tax payer funds and did all that was wrong, and turn to small business and cut off all loans, lines of credit and credit card limits. What they don't take away they jack the interest rates through the roof on. They have put many small businesses out of business.............AND, this is good??????

Obama why did I vote for you? You said help was on the way to Main Street USA, but you and congress sit there and do nothing. You should have done something for small businesses the first few months in office. Small businesses need to hire people to work for them to get some where and grow and make money. Large mega corporations just want to lay off as many folks as they can to make more money ($$$$$$$$$).

What to do???

Tax breaks now! Immediate payroll tax breaks....not a few bucks, but, something real......HELP small businesses make it through this time. You guys give hundreds of billions to trillions of tax payer cash to mega large corporations, and you guys give zip to the little guy. Most of those large corporations sit on our tax payer money, and want to just lay their employees off. What the hell is up with that????????? Get real, get real, get real!!!! Then they give out billions in massive bonuses, using tax payer money, another insult to hardworking Americans coast to coast.

Every month thousands and thousands of small business go out of business all around the USA, while you folks in the White House and the House and Senate do nothing. Tax breaks at the end of the year for the 2010 tax cycle are nice, but don't help in the now. Like tax breaks for businesses that hirer people on during the year......lol.....really guys, that's next year, does that really matter to a business trying to make it to next month????

We small and medium sized middle class business people NEED tax breaks in the real time.......like payroll tax breaks, and other kinds of tax breaks we can feel now. AND, we NEED them NOW!!!! Then maybe small and medium sized businesses would have some extra money, to hirer people on and help get folks working again. Its called economics 101. Then people spend and get taxed and things come together. It is tough to collect taxes on workers when they are not working, and it is tough to collect taxes on businesses that have gone under..........or to collect taxes on what people buy if people and/or businesses have no money to buy anything.

As a small business person, people have asked me if I would have been better off with McCain as president. Well I'm sure I would not be any worse off, maybe things would be better??? The Democrats do not have my vote in the up coming election cycles of 2010 or 2012, unless Democrats do something. President Obama and Congress do something and you have my vote. Do nothing and I'm voting Republican. Yes, the Republicans suck, but Democrats DO NOT take my vote for granted, or the votes of my family. DO SOMETHING!!!!!

You fill the banks and Wall Street with our hard earned tax payer money, and they just sit on it, they don't loan it out, then they turn around and raise our credit card rates to 31.99%. Is this HOPE we can look to?

HOPE...................I think NOT!!!

Please join me in supporting the Help Haiti's Animals Recover From Earthquake petition

http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/347273059

The recent earthquake near Port-au-Prince left thousands of people and animals homeless, injured, and in need of help. Haiti is an impoverished country lacking animal shelters and welfare programs. It is also home to many animals.

These animals require emergency aid, including shelter, fresh water, and food. Experienced animal rescue workers need to be brought in to rescue and manage Haiti's animals in this catastrophe. During Katrina, many people were forced to separate from their companion animals and packs of homeless dogs formed in the streets. This caused more danger and suffering for both the people and animals of New Orleans.

The events of Hurricane Katrina showed what a tragedy it is when animals are not cared for during disasters--don't let those mistakes happen in Haiti. Tell President Obama and former President Clinton, U.S. ambassador to Haiti, to coordinate with animal welfare groups and include them in Haiti relief efforts.

Don't Leave Seniors Behind in Today's Bad Economy

http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/109570670

Many seniors across America are facing a difficult time in the current recession. They struggle with unaffordable housing and health care, along with rising costs for utilities, prescriptions and basic living expenses.

Five million seniors live on less than $10,000 annually and 25 percent survive on social security alone.* The economic crisis has intensified demand for programs and services serving America's older citizens. But still many more are simply falling through the cracks.

Seniors in your state should not be forgotten during this rough economy! Add your name to the list of people who believe seniors should receive the help they need to lead better and more fulfilling lives - with independence, dignity and control.

Canada promoting seal hearts, meat, fur in China

Canada promoting seal hearts, meat, fur in China

Canada promoting seal hearts, meat, fur in China
Posted: January 12, 2010, 8:41 AM by Mary Vallis

As the backlash against the Canadian seal hunt continues to grow, Gail Shea, the Fisheries Minister, is in Beijing this week promoting seal meat, fur and even hearts.

Citing cruel hunting practices, the European Union in May voted to ban the import of seal products. The ban will take effect in August of next year. In the meantime, Canada is focusing on market diversification — namely, establishing new trade opportunities with China.

"The EU was a small market for Canada. Of course, we're disappointed in their actions," Ms. Shea said by telephone from China today. "That being said, there are many other markets out there. That's what we're doing in China. We're trying to expand on the market that's here."

Canada's seal exports to China are limited to pelts and oil capsules, which Ms. Shea calls an "excellent source of omega-3." To open the Chinese market to other seal products, like meat and potentially seal heart valves — which research indicates could be used for transplant into humans — the Canada must build a market from the ground up.

Today Ms. Shea the 36th China Fur & Leather Products Fair, The Fisheries Minister said she has not observed any reticence about consuming seal products, but stressed Canada will also have to provide guidance on how to use seal meat.

"We are going to have to create a market and we've talked to the importers about that," Ms. Shea told a conference call.

What she has encountered in China are misconceptions that the Canadian seal industry is illegal.

"It certainly is not illegal," Ms. Shea said.

On the same day that Ms. Shea was touting the high protein in seal meat and lauded the "impressive" seal fur fashions of Canadian designers, Reuters released revealing numbers on China's fur trade. Looks like its own animal offerings are suffering on the international market. China, the second-largest fur producer after Europe, has halved its mink production. Fox, meanwhile, is down by three-quarters during the same period.

In China, Reuters notes, fur is "less taboo and more of a novelty."
